What procedures are
adopted by contemporary painters and why? How are technologies
adapted and appropriated into the methods and processes of
painting? What kinds of skills do painters need? The
Processes of Painting explored questions about
methodologies and technologies as well as notions of expression
and intention through a series of conversations with painters
who teach at the UAL.
Speakers included:
Stella Capes, Mikey Cuddihy,Jeffrey Dennis,Richard Dyer, Mick Finch,
Rebecca Fortnum, Dereck Harris, Katrine Hjelde, Vanessa Jackson, Paula Kane,
Katie Pratt, Mario Rossi and Daniel
Sturgis.
The event was
organized in collaboration with a newly formed Painting Research
Group at UAL called Paint Club, open to all interested
in developing painting research within the University
and beyond. It was supported by Central St Martins,
Chelsea, Wimbledon, Camberwell and Byam Shaw.
How Art Thinks was an ICFAR research project that aimed to explore artists' narratives as
well as find new ways to document artists' processes. This
symposium coincided with the evening launch at the October
Gallery of Studio Wall: Paula Kane published by
Eyeseefar, ICFAR'S publishing imprint and RGAP Research Group for
Artists Publications in collaboration with the Visual
Intelligences Research Project at LICA, Lancaster University.
